September light

September light

Have you noticed how the light is changing? A few days ago I was sitting outside with a few projects that needed to be finished (new patterns coming soon!) and I noticed how my colour palette had shifted. My tea cup, a hand-thrown mug I bought on holiday from a local potter, and my embroidery thread for both projects reflected that special shade of blue that a clear day in September seems to radiate.

I went digging through my old blog posts and found this picture from 2015, taken in September, because I remembered that there too I had been writing about that clear blue light in September.

So take this email as an encouragement to drink in that light and look around for inspiration. If you regularly create, do you notice shifts in the colours you use or are drawn to and do you see a correlation to the changing light outside?

This month I have an exhibition at the library in Hilversum. I really enjoyed putting this exhibition together. I’ll be teaching an embroidery course here in October and so included embroidery, but I was given free reign to show whatever I wanted, and spent a few months exploring embroidery on watercolour paper and creating abstract mini quilts where I played with the shapes and colours and quilted with embroidery thread. If you’re in Hilversum do go see it! There are also a few spaces left in the embroidery class, we’ll be spending four weeks learning lots of stitches and basically enjoying creating together.

I’ve also been getting ready for two shows in the autumn. October 11-13 I’ll be at the Creaweekend in Hardenberg and November 14-16 I’ll be selling at the Handwerkbeurs in Groningen. I’m looking forward to interacting with customers there, please do say hello!

In addition to my existing patterns I’ve been working hard on getting a few new patterns ready for selling there: a new teapot and tea cup pattern, and two new bedroom patterns. These are in collaboration with Dita Blom from Blomsterstuga, she is specialised in Swedish embroidery and leads trips to Scandinavia which I have loved following on instagram, the embroidery and textile work she shares from these trips are so inspiring. I met her at the handwerkbeurs in January and bought some of her woollen embroidery thread to experiment with and was also inspired by the Swedish embroidery technique of bottensöm which I integrated in these two designs.

Wishing you some lovely September weather and I’d love to hear about what is inspiring your creativity at the moment.

All the best,

Karin
